Like many mathematical terms, what appears to be a (short) phrase (in this case, a noun phrase consisting of a single noun pre-modified by a single adjective), which a reader not versed in Mathematical English might expect could be parsed and understood as such (in this case, as being simply a shorter way to say “a ‘space’ that is ‘symmetric'”), is in fact an atomic lexical item; its meaning in Mathematical English cannot be deduced from its components “space” and “symmetric”.
